1000 Solar Rikshaws for Commonwealth games

Posted on 28/Feb/2010

New Delhi: At least 1,000 solar rickshaws will be deployed to ferry over 7,000 athletes and their delegates during the Commonwealth Games later this year.
A joint project between Delhi government and the central government-run Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), these zero carbon vehicles will help players commute inside the Games villages and reach sporting venues from Metro stations.

I disagree..see article below for explanation.
India EV : The EV-Tsunami hits India shores.
The penetration of Electric Vehicles in the Indian market is certain. Reva and Tata have ambitious plans to dominate the EV industry not just at home but abroad. IndiaEV.com will be a hot destination for indian and foreigners looking for India EV.

PR Log (Press Release) – Feb 27, 2010 – The penetration of Electric Vehicles in the Indian market is certain. Reva and Tata have ambitious plans to dominate the EV industry not just at home but abroad. With huge manufacturing capacity, cheaper labor and tremendous government subsidy the West should ready itself for a n invasion of EVs from India starting in 2012.
India EV Future is assured. When that happens it will become obvious that possessing a real good piece of internet real estate like INDIAev.com made sense 2 years earlier for the visionary entrepreneur. To give the reader a direction of things to come let me point out that BYD e6 is already slated to enter the Indian EV market within a year. So are many other companies including GM. Read below their press release a few months ago and you'll understand why indiaEV domain makes a lot of sense and why IndiaEV.com is likely to become India EV future preferred online destination.

"We are pleased to be joining hands with Reva, a leader in the development of electric drivetrains and control systems," said GM India President and Managing Director Karl Slym. "We will also work closely with the government of India, which has expressed a goal of reducing fossil fuel dependence, in the development of an electric vehicle infrastructure. We look forward to giving our customers a new choice of environmentally friendly products."
General Motors India and Reva Electric Car Company announced today in New Delhi the signing of an agreement to cooperate in the development of electric vehicles for the India market.
GM India and Reva will jointly develop car platforms, electric vehicle technology and advanced vehicle control systems. Their goal is to create and launch an affordable small car for domestic consumers.
The two companies have begun feasibility studies of GM's small vehicle platforms to host the electric technology. GM and Reva plan to announce more details about the vehicle soon and begin production in 2010.

GM recently opened its new Global Battery Systems Lab, which is the largest and most technologically advanced battery lab in the United States. The new lab will lead GM's global advanced battery engineering resources and expedite the introduction of electrically driven vehicles, including the Chevrolet Volt, as well as plug-in hybrid and hybrid-electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles.

By Dr.A.Jagadeesh Nellore (AP) on 28 02, 2010The Solar Rikshaw though it appears to be novel, one doubts about its practical utility. The present Solar cell efficiency is very low (about 14 percent). Moreover the battery capacity charged by Solar cells may not allow it to travel more than a couple of kilometers in our village roads. The solar cars built in the western countries are only for fashion. On the other hand the manually driven rickshaw design is excellent. In Northern India the rickshaw puller takes about 10 school children with ease. Such a design if adopted will help to increase the solar rickshaw efficiency. Though I am not against the concept of Solar Rikshaw, what I want to emphasise is that many rural technologies require social and cultural factors as much as technology for success. Let us hope this solar rickshaw won't be another case of low cost computers for schools, a case of high promise and low performance.
